Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Phoenix (PHX)

Book your flights in the Goldilocks Window

Over the years, we’ve found that surprisingly great deals on airfare can happen just about any time—and that there’s a sweet spot in advance of most trips when fares are at their best prices. We call this the Goldilocks Window, and it’s when we recommend people book their flights. For domestic trips, it’s 1-3 months ahead of time. For international trips, it’s 2-8 months ahead.

The Goldilocks Window isn’t magic, though, so if you’ll be flying during a holiday or peak tourist season, or if your travel dates are set in stone, we suggest adding a few months to the math—inflexibility frequently means deals are harder to find. Christmas vacations, for instance, should be booked in July. And cheap last-minute fares aren’t very common. In fact, airlines usually raise prices at 21, 14, and 7 days leading up to a flight, so book before those times if you can.

Search multiple airports nearby (or farther away)

When most people start planning a trip, they check airfare from their home airport—because that makes sense. What can happen if you only look at one departure airport, though, is that you can miss out on a screaming good deal flying out of a different city altogether. We see surprisingly low fares out of airports all over the place, big and small, and sometimes you’ll still save money on your trip—even if it means having to add a leg to your itinerary.

Many Washington DC dwellers are probably used to looking at flights from multiple airports in the area, but here’s a concrete example of how broadening the airport net could save you quite a bit of cash. Maybe Reagan National is the airport closest to you, but fares to Phoenix are all over $230 roundtrip. Flights from nearby Baltimore, however, are under $140 roundtrip. And even if you don’t have multiple airports within easy reach from your house, you may want to peek at fares from other major airports before you resign yourself to paying more for a flight from the nearest one.

Plan to fly on the cheaper days

This seems like an obvious point, but hear us out. One of the single best ways you can save money on airfare is to keep your travel schedule flexible. As soon as you restrict when you can travel, you’re stuck with the prices the airline sets. The peak season, for instance, is when higher demand for flights means higher prices on tickets.

If you can’t avoid the peak summer travel season, try to aim for the first couple of weeks in June or the last two weeks of August, when fares can be a bit less costly. You should also try to fly on the days of the week when airfare tends to be cheaper (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays) and steer clear of the days when it’s more expensive (Fridays and Sundays).

Automate the search with fare alerts

We’re all busy, and few people have the time to spend hours every week scouring the internet for better airfare deals. You can outsource a good chunk of that time by letting technology do some of the work for you. Sign up for fare alerts for the trip you want to take, and when the fare drops into the range you want to pay, you’ll get an email notification. Do this far enough in advance, and you’ll be able to see the price fluctuate, giving you the confidence to book when you see a good deal. Just note that if you’re keeping your travel plans flexible, you’ll have to set up a few fare alerts (or join Going, which monitors all fares from your home airport).

Frequently asked questions about flying to Phoenix (PHX)

What is the airport code for Sky Harbor International Airport?

The airport code for Sky Harbor International Airport is PHX.

When is high season in Phoenix?

Much of Arizona stays warm for much of the year, which makes it a particularly popular area for snowbirds looking to escape colder winter temperatures to the north. Phoenix’s long high season (October to mid-May) reflects this, though the city is busiest from January to April.

When is the best time to visit Phoenix?

Summers in Phoenix can be downright oppressively hot, and summer heat can stretch from May through early October. Locals will tell you it’s a “dry heat,” and while they may be technically correct, the general consensus among travelers is to avoid the summer if possible. November-April is high season, but it’s also the best time to be in Phoenix weather-wise. Book well in advance as rooms fill up quickly.

Does Sky Harbor International Airport have its own on-site hotel?

No, there is not a hotel inside or connected to Phoenix’s airport. There are multiple airports a few minutes away from the terminal, though, and they offer shuttle service to and from the airport.

What lounges are available at Sky Harbor International Airport?

There are two terminals at Sky Harbor (Terminal 3 and Terminal 4), each of which has several lounges.

Terminal 3

  • There is a Delta Sky Club near F8, which has a buffet, full-service bar, and free WiFi. Sky Club members, Delta’s and Air France’s first-class or business-class ticketholders, SkyMiles Reserve cardholders, and AmEx Platinum cardholders with a Delta boarding pass get free entry.

  • There is a United Club near E3 with selected snacks, a full-service bar, and free WiFi. United Club members, travelers flying first or business class on United or its Star Alliance partners, United Club Infinite cardholders, and some elite-status United or Star Alliance frequent flyers get free entry. Day Passes are also available for $59.

  • There is also an Escape Lounge on level 4 after security. It has a self-service buffet, a bar, and free WiFi. It’s a Centurion Studio partner, so it’s free for AmEx Platinum and Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders, but access is available to any passenger through a $40 day pass booked online ($45 if purchased on-site).

Terminal 4

  • There are three American Airlines Admirals Clubs in this terminal: above A7-A9, between A19-A21, and above B5-B7. Each of them has selected snacks, a full-service bar, premium food available for purchase, and free WiFi. Admirals Club members, American Airlines travelers flying first or business class, Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard cardholders with an AA boarding pass, ConciergeKey members with an AA boarding pass, and AirPass members with Admirals Club privileges get free entry. Day passes are available for $59.

  • There is an American Express Centurion Lounge across from B21 that has hot and cold buffets, a premium bar, shower facilities, workstations, and free WiFi. Centurion members, AmEx global Platinum cardholders, and Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders get free entry.

  • There is another Escape Lounge across from B21 with similar amenities to the one in Terminal 3, but this is not a Centurion partner, so access is simply available to any passenger through a $40 day pass booked online ($45 if purchased on-site).

What are the rules for traveling with pets to Sky Harbor International Airport?

There are different regulations around bringing animals into the state of Arizona based on the kind of animal and where you’re coming from. Dogs coming from another US state, for instance, must have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) that was issued within the past 30 days before arriving. The CVI has to stipulate that the dog is up-to-date on its rabies vaccines. For more details and information about other animals, check the Arizona Department of Agriculture’s website. And be sure to check with your airline about any specific rules they have about flying with animals, too.

In the Phoenix airport itself, service animals must be kept on a leash at all times, and non-service animals must be kenneled. There are nine pet relief areas scattered throughout the airport—one even features plants native to the area.
